Twila Blume(301) 315-0467 Quilting came to me inevitably. As a child, my Grandmother Ziegler’s practical and frugally-made quilts were quilted or knotted as I played, and of course comforted me as I slept. A volunteer at a convalescent home, she made quilts for the residents from old neck ties and abandoned clothing--really anything she could find. While my quilting differs from hers, my desire to build a new piece from something other than fabric from a bolt, perhaps something never intended for this purpose, is a new direction for me and leads me away from traditional quilting without losing an affinity for them. Personal experiences have made me consider life and death, the fragility of health, the impermanence of what once seemed permanent, the abruptness of change, the reluctance to accept unwanted events, and the circle of life. The circle of my life is not perfectly shaped, but rather is fragmented, segmented, and rough. My current textile compositions reflect my longing for connecting the pieces, of bringing the past into the present. It’s my belief that my Grandmother is with me with every stitch.
